Pelletizing facilities, Veriña. 1998
This plant is running with a production capacity of 120,000 tons per year. The final mixture is shaped in pellets and its destination is the sintering plant of the ArcelorMittal factory in Gijón-Veriña.
In this plant they process the sludge from the steelworks, the sludge of rolling mills and all the dust generated in the catchments of each of the plants of the ArcelorMittal factory, both in Avilés and in Gijón. The plant has an area for the homogenization of products where they mix the different types of sludge that they receive, another automated mixing area where they add the dust stored in silos to this sludge, and a third zone of pelletizing, where the previous mixtures are agglomerated and shaped into pellets through a cone with a diameter of 3.5 m, by adding solid and liquid binders. This pelletizing phase is automated and also controlled from a PC.
Briquetting facilities, Avilés. 1990-1997 (now out of service)
This was an old plant located in Avilés, and it processed around 80,000 tons of waste annually, in the shape of briquettes which were used as a coolant. The waste that they used was mainly sludge. The facility consisted of three distinct areas; premix and blending, briquetting and final screening. This facility was dismantled in 2000 when all the production went to the new SADIM plant in the ArcelorMittal factory in Veriña-Gijón.

This new facility with a capacity of about 80-90.000 tons altogether, agglomerates in the shape of briquettes and processes waste and by-products of diferent origins, thick sludge of the Rail Hot Bands (TBC), plus small quantities of hazardous waste that were being dumped. They make two types of briquettes, depending on the needs of ArcelorMittal; one is used as a coolant and the other one as a metal contribution in the converters load.
The facility has three distinct areas, one for the preparation and homogenization of the raw material, a second one for briquetting and storage of green product, and a third screening area for the removal of fines before supplying the Steelworks.
